Malang | Movie | 2020

“Years after a police encounter separates him from his lover, an angry young man goes on a killing spree, with an equally vengeful cop on his heels.” This intro, the trailer, the subtitle and even the title make it seem like the movie is more than it is. In this case, the movie does not do justice to the hype.

The plot is about of Advait (Aditya Roy Kapoor), Sara (Disha Patani), Anjaney Agashe (Anil Kapoor), Michael Rodrigues (Kunal Khemu), and, to some extent, Jesse (Elli Avrram) and Teresa Rodrigues (Amruta Khanvilkar). There are two storylines – one with Advait, Sara and Jesse, and one with Anjaney, Michael and Teresa. The two converge at around the middle of the movie amidst the chaos surrounding the killings of some policemen.

What is good? The world building (although not that close to the reality of Goa, the movie being set in Goa), the lighting (I don’t think I can say the same about the camera work) and the music are noteworthy. The performance of the main cast is okay, but that of Anil Kapoor and especially Kunal Khemu are commendable.

What is not good? The basics. The plot has potential, but the writing is poor. There seems to be no focus on character building, with the characters not being consistent and being given seemingly half-baked backstories for their actions and their motives. This inconsistency in the characters is not about them evolving over time, a point which could have been exploited for the intended plot of the movie in a more fitting manner. The romantic relationship of Advait and Sara seems forced even with visible chemistry between Roy Kapoor and Disha Patani. This affects almost everything in the movie, quite understandably so. One would think that it is all based on a draft and not the final version of the script – a test product.

This action thriller with a touch of romance falls short in all three of these, like the 3 supporting pillars are still works in progress and the roof has been forced on them. I would not recommend this unless you simply want something to be played in the background, or you want to watch it simply for some of the cast of the movie.
